Amassing the necessary funds for a down payment and closing costs is often the most significant financial hurdle for aspiring homeowners. While a twenty percent down payment is traditionally recommended to avoid paying private mortgage insurance, many loan programs allow for much lower down payments, sometimes as little as three to five percent.
